Natural Resource Issues In Deschutes County

CONSERVING WATER:

The current water supply forecast for the spring and summer of 2021 is below average. This raises concerns on water storage and available water for Central Oregon irrigators. .Now more than ever we need to improve our irrigation water management to conserve water, improve stream flows, enhance recreation and meet optimum yields.

FOREST HEALTH:

Since 2014, the Deschutes SWCD, U.S. Forest Service (FS) and USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) have been working together to improve the health of forests where public and private lands meet. Through the Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership, efforts are being made to restore the health of the forest, reducing wildfire threats to communities and landowners, protecting water quality, and enhancing wildlife habitat.

Urban Agriculture:

Deschutes County continues to grow and more urbanized. It is important to address these changes and work within city limits to assist communities and schools to ensure proper soil health and available healthy foods.
